POSITION SUMMARY:
The role of Golf Course Maintenance Technician I perform a variety of specialized and routine manual and semi-skilled golf course turfgrass management, landscape construction, maintenance, and repair work in an assigned area of responsibility, including golf course fairways, greens, rough areas, cart paths, and bunkers on city golf course property. May serve as the lead worker over an assigned maintenance crew; performs other duties as required or assigned. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Superintendent, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work required that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment in various terrains and weather conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•Performs the full range of manual and semi-skilled golf course turfgrass management, landscape construction, maintenance, and repair work in an assigned area of responsibility.
•Instructs or leads the work of an assigned maintenance crew and/or seasonal workers to ensure the safe and efficient completion of all work assignments.
•Maintains and repairs City golf courses, cart paths, and other areas located on city properties.
•Maintains, adjusts, and makes light repairs on golf course maintenance tools and power equipment, as necessary.
•Inspects and maintains golf course amenities such as buildings, benches, shelters, restrooms, and parking areas.
•Performs turfgrass management practices including mowing, irrigation installation and calibration, aeration, fertilization, and pesticide application.
•Installs, operates and troubleshoots irrigation systems, including conventional and 2-wire controllers, valve repair and maintenance, and head installation, cleaning, repair, and adjustment.
•Secures assigned work areas from hazards to ensure the safety of recreational participants, maintenance crews, and the general public, including signage, barricades, and safety barriers.
•Maintains golf courses and City grounds in clean and safe conditions, including picking up trash, shrub pruning, weeding, spraying, plowing, de-icing, snow removal, and general maintenance, as necessary.
•Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned and attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:
•High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) required.
•1 or more years of experience in Golf Course Maintenance and/or turfgrass management preferred; and/or any work experience or training that provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
•State of Idaho Pesticide Applicator's License with Core Competency and Ornamental Herbicide endorsement within 1 year of hire.
•First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification within 1 year of hire.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
•Ability to lead and supervise the work of others as assigned.
•Ability to efficiently operate related City vehicles, construction and maintenance tools, and equipment, including trucks, trailers, tractors, backhoes, mowers, sprinklers, and other related equipment.
•Ability to work outdoors for extended periods with exposure to varying weather conditions and day or night schedules as required.
•Ability to meet the physical demands of mechanical and labor-intensive duties including the ability to stand and walk for extended periods and strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment.
•Skill to use a variety of hand tools and power tools safely.
•Skill and knowledge in using a variety of cleaning chemicals and supplies safely in a public use environment.
•Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions, operate GIS systems and blueprints and perform shop mathematics.
•Skill to prepare accurate and reliable record keeping, including work order and asset management software.
•Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.
•Skill to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.
•Ability and willingness to quickly learn and use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
•Use of integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
•Skill to operate a smartphone and personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks and the ability and willingness to quickly learn and use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily in an outdoor environment and the employee in this position is subject to varying outdoor environmental conditions such as hot and cold temperatures, wet or frozen surfaces, uneven ground, and other varying weather conditions.
