Heavy Truck Mechanic

Job Summary:

The Heavy Truck Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy-duty trucks and related equipment at Advance Equipment Service. This position ensures that all vehicles operate safely and efficiently by performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical issues, and completing necessary repairs in compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities: 1. Inspection and Diagnostics

  • Conduct thorough inspections of heavy trucks to identify mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and structural issues.
  • Use diagnostic tools and software to pinpoint problems in engines, transmissions, braking systems, and other components.

2. Repairs and Maintenance

  • Perform repairs on diesel engines, transmissions, drivetrains, hydraulic systems, and electrical components.
  • Conduct routine maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, brake adjustments, and tire inspections.
  • Replace or rebuild worn or defective parts, including belts, hoses, bearings, and seals.
  • Weld or fabricate parts as needed to ensure structural integrity and function.

3. Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure all repairs comply with safety regulations, including OSHA and DOT standards.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Keep maintenance records updated and ensure all repairs are properly documented.

4. Tools and Equipment Management

  • Properly use and maintain hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ensure shop equipment is in good working condition and report any malfunctions.

5. Roadside and Emergency Repairs

  • Respond to breakdowns and perform on-site repairs when needed.
  • Troubleshoot issues quickly to minimize downtime and ensure the safe operation of vehicles.

Qualifications: Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical school certification or associate degree in diesel mechanics, automotive technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 4-5 years of experience in heavy truck repair and maintenance.

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, air brake systems, electrical wiring, and hydraulic systems.
  • Experience with diagnostic software and tools such as Cummins INSITE, CAT ET, or similar programs.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics.

Certifications and Licenses

  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certification in Medium/Heavy Truck preferred.
  • CDL (Commercial Drivers License) or the ability to obtain one may be required.
  • DOT certification for vehicle inspections is a plus.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to lift and work in a physically demanding environment.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or on-call shifts as needed.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a shop, garage, or outdoor environment with exposure to noise, dirt, grease, and hazardous materials.
  • Must be able to stand, kneel, and bend for extended periods.
